Sustainable Conservation Trust is excited to announce our collaboration with ACAN UK to promote the new Demolition Map UK, inspired by the successful Swedish version. The Swedish map, populated with details of hundreds of buildings, can be explored at Rivningskartan. It features buildings marked in different colours to indicate their status: demolished, threatened, or saved, with information dating back to 2016, the year the UK signed the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.
The Demolition Map aims to raise awareness about the widespread issue of demolition and its significant environmental impact. It provides a platform for people to share information, data, and personal stories about buildings they care about. In Sweden, the map has attracted considerable national media attention and has proven to be an effective campaign tool.
The UK Demolition Map, accessible at demolitionmap.uk, has just been launched and needs more entries before its public debut. SCT has agreed with ACAN to publicise and circulate the map within Portsmouth, encouraging all local organisations to participate by adding buildings.
To upload details of a building, go to the "Add Building" section and press the "Add Location" button in the bottom left corner. Pinpoint the location of the building or the site of a demolished building, and a form will appear for you to add relevant information. Make sure to have your data ready before filling out the form. If you encounter any difficulties or wish to add extra information after submitting, please email demolitionmapuk@gmail.com.
We urge everyone in Portsmouth to use the map and contribute to this important initiative. Together, we can reduce unnecessary demolitions, preserve our built heritage, and promote sustainable development.
